Does Our Father Deliver the Entire Lord’s Prayer to Us Through Jesus?

For all of God’s promises have been fulfilled in Christ with a resounding “Yes!” And through Christ, our “Amen” (which means “Yes”) ascends to God for his glory.   (2 Corinthians 1:20)

How does the Lord’s Prayer look through the “Yes” of Jesus ?  This question occurred to me when I compared  “Give us this day our daily bread”, and Jesus’ saying, “I am the bread of life”.

I looked further, and it appeared that line-by-line, everything in the Lord’s Prayer – the praise, the trust, the forgiveness, and the request for protection – are all provided by Jesus.  All Glory to our Father Who does this for us!

Let’s look at how Jesus delivers the whole Lord’s Prayer to us, starting at Matthew 6:9 in the NKJV:

Our Father in heaven,

God becomes our Father through the Good News of Jesus’ death and resurrection:

For we died and were buried with Christ by baptism. And just as Christ was raised from the dead by the glorious power of the Father, now we also may live new lives. (Romans 6:4)

Jesus replied, “I assure you, no one can enter the Kingdom of God without being born of water and the Spirit. Humans can reproduce only human life, but the Holy Spirit gives birth to spiritual life. So don’t be surprised when I say, ‘You must be born again.’” (John 3:5-7)

Those who have been born into God’s family do not make a practice of sinning, because God’s life is in them. So they can’t keep on sinning, because they are children of God. (1 John 3:9)

In the Old Testament, ‘Sons of God’ is a term used only for the angels and Adam, because God made them directly. (For more on this, see Who Are the Sons of God? ).  As Jesus explains above in John 3, all other humans are reproduced from humans, not made directly by God. But in Jesus’ resurrection we can be born again directly into God’s family by the Spirit. And we also become brothers and sisters of Jesus Himself.  Amen!

So now Jesus and the ones he makes holy have the same Father. That is why Jesus is not ashamed to call them his brothers and sisters.  (Hebrews 2:11)

But to all who believed him and accepted him, he gave the right to become children of God. (John 1:12)

For you are all sons of God through faith in Christ Jesus (Galatians 3:26)

By this the children of God and the children of the devil are obvious: anyone who does not practice righteousness is not of God, nor the one who does not love his brother.  (1 John 3:10)

Jesus told him, “I am the way, the truth, and the life. No one can come to the Father except through me.”  (John 14:6)

“I tell you the truth, you will ask the Father directly, and he will grant your request because you use my name.”  (John 16:23)

Hallowed be Your name.

Hallowed means to set apart and make Holy, to sanctify.  Glorifying,  praising, and blessing God’s name in Jesus all point to making His name Holy.

Who will not fear you, Lord, and glorify your name? For you alone are holy. All nations will come and worship before you, for your righteous deeds have been revealed.  (Revelation 15:4)

“…signs and wonders take place through the name of Your holy servant Jesus.”  (Acts 4:30)

Christ Jesus, who became to us wisdom from God, and righteousness and sanctification, and redemption  (1 Corinthians 1:30)

the Holy and Righteous One  (Acts 3:14)

“But for this purpose I came to this hour. Father, glorify Your name.” Then a voice came out of heaven: “I have both glorified it, and will glorify it again.”   (John 12:27-33)

Therefore when he had gone out, Jesus said, “Now is the Son of Man glorified, and God is glorified in Him; if God is glorified in Him, God will also glorify Him in Himself, and will glorify Him immediately.  (John 13:31-32)

“Blessing and glory and wisdom and thanksgiving and honor and power and might be to our God forever and ever! Amen” (Revelation 7:12).

Your kingdom come.

Jesus brings the Father’s Kingdom to us:

Jesus traveled throughout the region of Galilee, teaching in the synagogues and announcing the Good News about the Kingdom.   (Matthew 4:23)

“But if I am casting out demons by the Spirit of God, then the Kingdom of God has arrived among you.”   (Matthew 12:28)

Jesus replied, “I assure you, no one can enter the Kingdom of God without being born of water and the Spirit.”  (John 3:5)

For the Kingdom of God is not a matter of what we eat or drink, but of living a life of goodness and peace and joy in the Holy Spirit.   (Romans 14:17)

For the Kingdom of God is not just a lot of talk; it is living by God’s power.   (1 Corinthians 4:20)

For he has rescued us from the kingdom of darkness and transferred us into the Kingdom of his dear Son  (Colossians 1:13)

For he called you to share in his Kingdom and glory.  (1 Thessalonians 2:12)

Since we are receiving a Kingdom that is unshakable, let us be thankful and please God by worshiping him with holy fear and awe.  (Hebrews 12:28)

Your will be done on Earth as it is in Heaven.

Like Jesus, we should make the Father’s will our own:

“For I have come down from heaven, not to do my own will but the will of him who sent me. And this is the will of him who sent me, that I should lose nothing of all that he has given me, but raise it up on the last day. For this is the will of my Father, that everyone who looks on the Son and believes in him should have eternal life, and I will raise him up on the last day.”   (John 6:38-40)

“not my will, but yours be done”  (Luke 22:42)

“For whoever does the will of God, he is my brother and sister and mother.”   (Mark 3:35)

Do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewal of your mind, that by testing you may discern what is the will of God, what is good and acceptable and perfect.   (Romans 12:2)

Give thanks in all circumstances; for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus for you.  (1 Thessalonians 5:18)

Give us this day our daily bread.

Jesus replied, “I am the bread of life. Whoever comes to me will never be hungry again. Whoever believes in me will never be thirsty.”  (John 6:35)

“Yes, I am the bread of life!”  (John 6:48)

“I am the living bread that came down from heaven. Whoever eats this bread will live forever. This bread is my flesh, which I will give for the life of the world.”  (John 6:51)

Thank you Lord, for our Bread of Life; also for our daily bread and water; our health and breath.  All provided by Jesus, for “He sustains all things by his powerful word” (Hebrews 1:3)

And forgive us our sins,

“Take heart, son; your sins are forgiven.”  (Matthew 9:2)

“But I want you to know that the Son of Man has authority on earth to forgive sins.”  (Matthew 9:6)

This is my blood of the covenant, which is poured out for many for the forgiveness of sins.”  (Matthew 26:28)

everyone who believes in him receives forgiveness of sins through his name.  (Acts 10:43)

In Him we have redemption through his blood, the forgiveness of sins, in accordance with the riches of God’s grace  (Ephesians 1:7)

If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just and will forgive us our sins and purify us from all unrighteousness.  (1 John 1:9)

There is therefore now no condemnation to those who are in Christ Jesus, who do not walk according to the flesh, but according to the Spirit.   (Romans 8:1)

as we also forgive those who sin against us.

“For if you forgive men their trespasses, your heavenly Father will also forgive you.  But if you do not forgive men their trespasses, neither will your Father forgive your trespasses.”  (Matthew 6:14-15)

“And whenever you stand praying, if you have anything against anyone, forgive him, that your Father in heaven may also forgive you your trespasses.  But if you do not forgive, neither will your Father in heaven forgive your trespasses.”  (Mark 11:25-26)

“Judge not, and you shall not be judged. Condemn not, and you shall not be condemned. Forgive, and you will be forgiven.”  (Luke 6:37)

And be kind to one another, tenderhearted, forgiving one another, even as God in Christ forgave you.   (Ephesians 4:32)

…even as Christ forgave you, so you also must do.  (Colossians 4:32)

Then Peter came to Him and said, “Lord, how often shall my brother sin against me, and I forgive him? Up to seven times?”  Jesus said to him, “I do not say to you, up to seven times, but up to seventy times seven.”  (Matthew 18:21-22)

And do not lead us into temptation,

The Greek word translated as temptation can also mean “testing” and “trial”, and  “putting to the proof”.

And remember, when you are being tempted, do not say, “God is tempting me.” God is never tempted to do wrong, and he never tempts anyone else.  (James 1:13)

There he told them, “Pray that you will not give in to temptation.”  (Luke 22:40)

The temptations in your life are no different from what others experience. And God is faithful. He will not allow the temptation to be more than you can stand. When you are tempted, he will show you a way out so that you can endure.  (1 Corinthians 10:13)

Therefore, since we have a great high priest who has ascended into heaven, Jesus the Son of God, let us hold firmly to the faith we profess.  For we do not have a high priest who is unable to empathize with our weaknesses, but we have one who has been tempted in every way, just as we are—yet he did not sin.  Let us then approach God’s throne of grace with confidence, so that we may receive mercy and find grace to help us in our time of need.  (Hebrews 4:14-16)

But deliver us from the evil one.

Yes, and the Lord will deliver me from every evil attack and will bring me safely into his heavenly Kingdom. All glory to God forever and ever! Amen.  (2 Timothy 4:18)

But thanks be to God! He gives us the victory through our Lord Jesus Christ.  (1 Corinthians 15:57)

For he has rescued us from the dominion of darkness and brought us into the kingdom of the Son he loves, in whom we have redemption, the forgiveness of sins.  (Colossians 1:13-14)

He disarmed the spiritual rulers and authorities. He shamed them publicly by his victory over them on the cross. (Colossians 2:15)

You have died with Christ, and he has set you free from the spiritual powers of this world.  (Colossians 2:20)

For Yours is the kingdom

It is the Father’s Kingdom, and Jesus is the King:

“So You are a king?” Jesus answered, “You say correctly that I am a king. For this I have been born, and for this I have come into the world, to testify to the truth. Everyone who is of the truth hears My voice.”  (John 18:37)

Jesus Christ … he who is the blessed and only Sovereign, the King of kings and Lord of lords.  (1 Timothy 6:13–15)

“The world has now become the Kingdom of our Lord and of his Christ, and he will reign forever and ever.”  (Revelation 11:15)

…for he is Lord of lords and King of kings, and those with him are called and chosen and faithful.  (Revelation 17:14)

On his robe at his thigh was written this title: King of all kings and Lord of all lords.  (Revelation 19:16)

and the power

For I am not ashamed of the gospel, for it is the power of God for salvation to everyone who believes  (Romans 1:16)

For the word of the cross is foolishness to those who are perishing, but to us who are being saved it is the power of God.  (1 Corinthians 1:18)

I can do all things through Him who strengthens me.  (Philippians 4:13)

Christ the power of God and the wisdom of God.  (1 Corinthians 1:24)

…in Him you have been made complete, and He is the head over all rule and authority  (Colossians 2:10)

You know of Jesus of Nazareth, how God anointed Him with the Holy Spirit and with power  (Acts 10:38)

and the glory

He is the radiance of the glory of God and the exact imprint of his nature, and he upholds the universe by the word of his power.  (Hebrews 1:3–4)

“…if you believe, you will see the glory of God”  (John 11:40)

And the Word became flesh, and dwelt among us, and we saw His glory, glory as of the only begotten from the Father, full of grace and truth.  (John 1:14)

Jesus, because of the suffering of death crowned with glory and honor, so that by the grace of God He might taste death for everyone.  (Hebrews 2:9)

For when He received honor and glory from God the Father, such an utterance as this was made to Him by the Majestic Glory, “This is My beloved Son with whom I am well-pleased”  (2 Peter 1:17)

But for this purpose I came to this hour. Father, glorify Your name.” Then a voice came out of heaven: “I have both glorified it, and will glorify it again.”  (John 12:27-28)

Jesus *said, “Now is the Son of Man glorified, and God is glorified in Him; if God is glorified in Him, God will also glorify Him in Himself, and will glorify Him immediately.  (John 13:31-32)

For the Son of Man is going to come in the glory of His Father with His angels  (Matthew 16:27)

forever.

“The kingdom of the world has become the kingdom of our Lord and of His Christ; and He will reign forever and ever.”  (Revelation 11:15)

But about the Son he says, “Your throne, O God, will last for ever and ever; a scepter of justice will be the scepter of your kingdom.  But you are always the same; you will live forever.”  (Hebrews 1:8,12)

His dominion is an everlasting dominion which will not pass away  (Daniel 7:14)

“He will reign over Israel forever; his Kingdom will never end!”    (Luke 1:33)

God will give you a grand entrance into the eternal Kingdom of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ.  (2 Peter 1:11)

He has made us a Kingdom of priests for God his Father. All glory and power to him forever and ever! Amen.  (Revelation 1:6)

The perfect verse to end on – Kingdom, glory, power, forever and ever!

Amen
