Jesus and His Blood

Over a year ago, the question came up, “Why did Jesus have to shed His blood and die, why blood?” I remember fumbling around, frankly embarrassed that I couldn’t answer such a fundamental question immediately off the top of my head.

So this morning, I’m reading Hebrews and the answer appears, clearly explained in detail. Here are some answers from Scripture:

Why did Jesus come to Earth in flesh and blood?

Because God’s children are human beings—made of flesh and blood—the Son also became flesh and blood. For only as a human being could he die, (Hebrews 2:14)

Why did Jesus shed His blood and die?

…and only by dying could he break the power of the devil, who had the power of death. Only in this way could he set free all who have lived their lives as slaves to the fear of dying. (Hebrews 2:14-15)

Why was blood involved?

(the Lord speaking to Moses)
“for the life of the body is in its blood. I have given you the blood on the altar to purify you, making you right with the Lord. It is the blood, given in exchange for a life, that makes purification possible. (Leviticus 17:11)

What was God’s will for us in Jesus’ death?

For God’s will was for us to be made holy by the sacrifice of the body of Jesus Christ, once for all time. (Hebrews 10:10)

What is the result?

And so, dear brothers and sisters, we can boldly enter heaven’s Most Holy Place because of the blood of Jesus. By his death, Jesus opened a new and life-giving way through the curtain into the Most Holy Place. And since we have a great High Priest who rules over God’s house, let us go right into the presence of God with sincere hearts fully trusting him. For our guilty consciences have been sprinkled with Christ’s blood to make us clean, and our bodies have been washed with pure water. (Heb 10:19-22)

Because of Christ and our faith in him, we can now come boldly and confidently into God’s presence. (Ephesians 3:12)

Amen
